Short presentation

Dear visitor, welcome to my homepage. My name is Julien Lam and I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Université Libre de Bruxelles under the supervision of Dr. James Lutsko. Previously, I was at the University of Bristol working with Dr. Patrick C. Royall. I did my PhD in fundamental physics at the Institut Lumière Matière (Lyon) with Dr. David Amans after graduating a master degree in Fundamental Physics at the Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon.

Main research interests

To synthesize nanoparticles two approaches can be adopted (See Fig. 1). First, one can go from a bulk material and slice it into smaller objects until it reaches the requested size. These methods are called top-down methods. On the other hand, one can also use a purely atomized or ionized gas and have it recombine into molecules, clusters and nanoparticles. These methods are called bottom-up methods. In both techniques, the chemico physical mechanisms are yet to be clearly identified. How the temperature, the pressure and the environment composition influence the stoichiometry, the crystallinity and the size of the nanoparticles is still an opened question I am interested in.

During my thesis, I worked on the Pulsed Laser Ablation In liquid (PLAL) technique. When a pulsed-laser is focused into a solid target immersed in water, the material is evaporated. Nucleation and growth occur in the liquid and nanoparticles are synthesized. The method can be considered as versatile because one can try to synthesize any kinds of materials. Also, the nanoparticles are directly stabilized by the solvant so there is no need of complexing agents, the nanoparticles are described as ligand-free. However, various processes can occur during the synthesis and the aim of my thesis is to understand these different components (See Fig. 2).
